Follow Your Heart Cafe
We were hungry and couldn't face cooking in Art's LA closet-of-a-kitchen. Plus the girls were with grandparents, so we were free to eat experimentally. Our options were limited since it was late on a Monday. Taking all this into consideration, we cut across the San Fernando Valley to Follow Your Heart Cafe, a mostly organic veg eatery that's open 7 days a week until 9. I was excited to eat at this vegetarian landmark and slather vegenaise on everything!
There's my Italian Salad (marinated artichoke hearts, garbanzo beans, red onion, black olives, tomatoes, pepperoncinis, on a bed of organic greens)
and Art's Caesar Salad (vegetarian version of the classic with organic Romaine lettuce, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, croutons, with garlic bread)
Both salads were delicious and devoured.
"finally!" There's Art's Reuben (thinly sliced wheatmeat, natural swiss cheese, sauerkraut, mustard and vegenaise on oversized rye bread)
Mine is a Club (triple decker with wholewheat bread, turkey-style wheatmeat, vegetarian bacon bits, tomato, lettuce, vegenaise, and I added avocado)
each had carrots piled high and was delicious. But Art's would have been better had it not sat in the window for so darn long. duh!
Here's a photo of my sandwich sitting lonely on the table waiting for the other. We waited and waited, and our waiter was no where to be seen, and no one else received our wondering glance. I watched the sandwich sit under the heat lamp...
Never fear, the service won't keep us away, and perhaps it'd be better next time? Though Art chalks it up to classic vegan service. Is there something to this? Have you gotten apathetic service at veg restaurants?

Heh - "classic vegan service" - what a great way to put it!
BTW, I have encountered that type of service at veg restaurants... Sometimes it's kinda slow, a bit disinterested, and partially inclined to eye-rolling. I'm not sure what's up with that... maybe it's because people know that vegans will put up with just about anything to get some good, veg-friendly food!
Anyway, it looks like all of your food was fab - those pics are great!
I'm so jealous!!
EH, the last time I ate at FYH cafe, we left without paying. They couldn't decide who our waiter was, it took forever to get any service, the people working there were talking instead of working, and after they brought the food, they never came back to check on us, clear the table, or bring the check! We waited a long time (we were outside) and finally just gave up.
Hmmm...Follow Your Heart is one of my favorite restaurants on earth and their vegan Reuben is definitely my favorite sandwich on earth. I've never had that kind of lackluster service there, so hopefully it was just an off night!
Yes, unfortunately we encounter horrible service at so many veg restaurants...what is up with that!
Sounds awesome!
Cheers,
Kristen
wow, i am always so envious ( i think i spelled that wrong) of your resto's. that sammy looks sooooo yummy!!! dang you! lol
Yum! Wonderful pics, Vicki.
Another place I've been meaning to check out!
Your sandwiches look yummy Vicki. I love that walking into FYH is like stepping back in time.
The food looks great. I'm always amazed by all the great veg restaurants you review. We have so few veggies restaurants in Atlantic Canada...
Btw, I know you mentioned on my blog that you wanted a copy of my cookbook. If your interested in writing a review (which shouldn't be too hard! So far, all of the book's reviewers have loved it.) of the book and posting about it on your blog, I can send you a complimentary e-copy of the book. You can email me at aurelie@aurelieshealthycuisine.com (Make sure that my email doesn't get into the junk folder when I email you back, please!).
I love eating at veg restaurants and being able to order anything off the menu. Yum!
Those sandwiches look fantastic and huge...but the veggies all make up for it, right? I love the carrot chips instead of potato chips.
Hey Spuddy gal! Are YOU home from Calley-fornia now! HOPE YOU had a SWEET HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! It fell on Mother's Day this year! Jer and I went out to eat with mom and dad! Yayyyyyyy!(((((((Vicki))))) going to dust that WONDERFUL stained glass YOU gifted me with in a bit, hanging new kitchen curtains today! Phew! Can YOU come help me sweets?!! Hugs and kisses to all!
Too bad about the crappy service. Blossoming Lotus here in Portland is delicious, but they have the crappiest service, given with a side of hipster attitude. I have a serious love/hate relationship with them. I've always wondered what the FYH restaurant would be like, as I would definitely try it, but I don't like their cheese.
Those sandwiches look great! (and really filling too!)
Hi Vicki,
That place sounds great. I'll have to go check it out.

I never go out to eat because here in Ohio there are no vegan restaurants unless I travel one hour to Akron. Since I don't eat corn syrup either I have to be very carefull of what is put in to create their meals. But the articule you put in was very good. thank you.
